Research into those early days reveals there also appeared, at different stages, a separate Boulder Association, Wednesday Association and First and Second Rates Association. Coolgardie and Kanowna had independent associations and there were often inter-town matches organised. The title of our administration was changed from association to league in 1907, which it retained until 1920 when it broke away from the WA League and affiliated with the Victorian Football Association until May, 1926, when it rejoined the WA parent body. The six-year affiliation with the VFA stemmed from the fact that from early in the century the Goldfields had a seat on the Australian National Football Council as well as the WA League. In 1919 there was a meeting of the former body in Melbourne, but because of a workers \' strike on the Trans line Goldfields delegate Tom Brett had to go by boat and arrived too late. His seat was declared vacant and has remained so ever since. It was felt the WA delegate did nothing to rectify the situation and, in fact, encouraged the deprivation of the Goldfields as an independent member of the ANFC. However, we have been affiliated with the WA league since 1926 - originally as the Goldfields National Football League and now as the Goldfields Football League Inc. (The Goldfields league agreed some years ago to drop national from its title to avoid confusion with the Great Northern Football League - GNFL).The Goldfields Football League is affiliated with the WA Country Football League and, through that body, the WAFL and Australian Football Council. HOME OF GOLDFIELDS FOOTBALL GFL House, located in the ground of the Sir Richard Moore Sports Centre in Kalgoorlie, was originally the headquarters for the Girl Guides Association in the Goldfields. It was acquired by a committee behind an unsuccessful move by the Goldfields Football League to enter a team in the WA Football League and eventually purchased by the GFL. Ian Clark took over from Bob Softley as GFL president on November 27, 1995, and was the driving force behind a project he initiated to convert the historic, but badly dilapidated girl guides hall into an administrative headquarters-cum museum. Hundreds of manhours later, the transformation of the original hall was complete and the inaugural meeting of the GFL in its new headquarters took place on June 17, 1996, in the league’s centenary year. The GFL Board of Directors, which was introduced in 1980 to replace the old club delegates system, was still in existence and those present at that historic first meeting in GFL House were Ian Clark (chairman), Scott Johnstone (sen. vice-president), Ron French (jun. vice-president), Peter Palmer (treasurer), Calvin Wilson (general secretary), Brian Macgregor (assistant sec.) and club directors Brian Hinchliffe (Boulder), Tony Dodd (Mines), Roger Grace (Railways), Richard Morris (Kalgoorlie) and Alec Mills (Kambalda). The decision to replace the Board of Directors with a Board of Commissioners was taken unanimously at the league’s annual general meeting on December 8, 1997. The inaugural Commissioners were Ian Clark, Hugh Gallagher, Jim Fraser, Peter Palmer, Sally Wilkinson and Mark Hendon. At its first meeting as a commission, the league elected Ian Clark chairman and Hugh Gallagher vice-chairman - positions they still occupy today. In recent years the league has continued to upgrade GFL House which is now the envy of most other country football leagues in WA. Its memorabilia includes some of the most historic football photographs in Australia, some of which are considered by the league to be virtually priceless. HISTORICAL RE-ENACTMENT On Saturday, July 24, 1993, the GFL staged a historical re-enactment of the first official GFL fixture played on July 29, 1896 - between Hannans and Boulder.++ The re-enactment featured players outfitted in historic garb representing Hannans and Boulder. The re-enactment carried an historic trophy which represents one of the earliest links with football in the Goldfields. It was restored for the re-enactment through a magnificent gesture by Mr Bill McKenzie, State manager at the time for the Channel 10 Television network. The trophy was initially awarded by Isidore Davis to Hannans Football Club on winning the 1897 grand final. However, in a fine gesture the players in turn presented it to Mr McKenzie \'s grandfather HL McKenzie - the then secretary-treasurer of the Hannans Football Club - on October 5, 1897. The handsome silver sterling cup had been in the possession of the McKenzie family for almost 100 years and is now the treasured possession of the Goldfields Football League after it was donated by Mr Bill McKenzie to coincide with the historical re-enactment. The trophy was manufactured in Birmingham, England, in 1897. ++ That historic match on July 29, 1896, was preceded by a meeting held at the Great Boulder Hotel (now Maritana Mall) in Maritana Street, Kalgoorlie, which marked the official start of football administration in the Goldfields. The body was known as the Hannans District Football Association and the first affiliated teams were Boulder, Hannans, Victorians and White Feather (Kanowna). Captained by Considine, Boulder won the inaugural premiership that year. BOARD OF DIRECTORS / COMMISSIONERS In 1978 Bert Boardley re-elected president as an interim measure after advising of his intention not to renominate. He officiated for the full season and again in 1979. The inaugural GFL Board of Directors was introduced in 1980 and held its first meeting on March 13 that year at the Kalgoorlie Country Club (replacing the old club delegates system). Doug Krepp elected GFL president for two years and the inaugural board of directors consisted of: Bob Softley (Boulder), Roy Mitchell (Mines), Don Jones (Railways), Peter Hunter (Kalgoorlie), George Botica (Kambalda) and John Bowler (Norseman). Calvin Wilson appointed league secretary on April 22, 1980 - replacing the long-serving Rex Mitchell, who chalked up more than 60 years \' service in this capacity or as treasurer/staff manager. Doug Krepp served as president until 1986 and was followed by Brian Macgregor (1987-91) and Bob Softley (1992-95). Ian Clark replaced Bob Softley in 1995 and is now in his eighth year at the helm of the GFL in his capacity as Chairman of the GFL Board of Commissioners, which was set up in 1997. FOOTBALL JUDICIARY Like many of its other current and past officials and administrators, the GFL is fortunate in having a Charges Tribunal/Appeals Board which comprises five long-serving, dedicated and experienced members. Co-chairmen are Goldfields Justices of the Peace Doug Daws and Murray Joyce, while the balance of the group consists of GFL life members Reg Arthur and Brian Macgregor and prominent local sporting identity George Grljusich. GFL general secretary Calvin Wilson also acts in a similar capacity with the tribunal. Handling charges and appeals is an unenviable task, but one which the tribunal members willingly take on year after year. The tribunal has been reappointed by the GFL Commission for another two-year term. In recent years Doug Daws has produced an annual report on matters handled by the tribunal which invariably make for interesting reading. His summary of charges dealt with in 2002 reveal a status quo for total charges (26 v 26) compared with season 2001. Striking charges remained the predominant aspect of the matters dealt with, constituting 60 per cent of the total (15 from 26 compared with 19 from 26 last year) - down percentage wise 13 per cent. The relatively few charges now dealt with by the tribunal reflects to a large degree the recent introduction of red and yellow cards which have had a significant impact on local football. Not so many years ago the tribunal was virtually meeting on a weekly basis, but this worrying trend has fortunately been reversed.",12);arrFiles[16]=new Array(17,"home.html","2006-04-23","home","","","Search this site NEXT WEEK \'S MATCHES - Round 6 Points Table Saturday, 29 April - Railways vs Boulder Sunday, 30 April - Kalgoorlie vs Kambalda Last Week \'s Results >>> ROUND 6 League Railways Boulder Kalgoorlie Mines Kambalda 12 12 8 4 0 Reserves Kalgoorlie Mines Railways Boulder Kambalda 16 8 8 4 0 Colts Railways Boulder Kambalda Mines Kalgoorlie 16 8 8 4 0 Taping Workshop Mouthguard Fact Sheets The Goldfields can justifiably lay claim to one of the proudest and most significant chapters in the long history of Australian Rules Football in this country. Since the formal introduction of Aussie Rules in this region in 1896, the Goldfields has built a reputation for producing some of the best talent seen in the sport and continues to do so at all levels today. The region’s contribution to Aussie Rules is second to none in regional centres throughout Australia and has been well chronicled in several publications, including Les Everett’s excellent book Gravel Rash - 100 years of Goldfields Football - produced in 1996 to mark the Goldfields Football League’s Centenary. Football in the Goldfields was launched under the official administrative banner of the Hannans Districts Football Association, which operated from 1896-1900, and had several name changes until it became the Goldfields Football League in 1988. A total of 21 teams has taken part in the major competition in the Goldfields, including Boulder City which was also established in 1896 and is the oldest country football club in Western Australia . Other famous teams include White Feather, Bulong, Cementers, Kanowna, Paddington, Trafalgar and Warriors. Five teams now make up the GFL - Boulder , Mines, Kalgoorlie , Railways and Kambalda. The GFL Junior Council consists of the same clubs, plus John Paul College . However, a public meeting of enthusiasts was held with the object of asking the league to inaugurate a junior competition. The league acceded to the wishes of a delegation from the meeting and the competition began on May 31. The teams originally used the names of the First Rates Clubs, but later adopted those of the recognised senior clubs and the inaugural grand final resulted in a win for Kalgoorlie. In 1943, the junior competition continued despite doubt expressed at the outset because of a lack of footballs, but by using footballs for about four matches each operations carried on. The flag went to Railways. In 1944 the third season of junior football saw Kalgoorlie City again achieve the premiership, while Railways captain F.Jarvis gave a fine performance in kicking 77 goals. In 1945, after three seasons of junior football the age restriction was lifted and the game once again reverted to open football. In 1947, early in the season the Goldfields National Junior Association was constituted as administrative successor to the old First Rates Association and each club came under the auspices of its senior body. In 1951, as from May 27 the junior association came under the league jurisdiction primarily for financial reasons. In 1953, an age qualification for juniors (and reserves) was introduced as an experiment. The maximum age for juniors was: a lad who reaches the age of 17 prior to the date of the first official fixture shall be ineligible to play in that grade. In 1954 the age qualifications introduced the previous season, with certain reservations, reverted to “open age.” In 1955, after the first round of junior football, Christian Brothers College (now known as John Paul College) was admitted to the competition and the following year the High School joined the junior competition. In 1959 the league postponed holding the junior grand final until after the A grade and it proved a worthwhile innovation, attracting 110 paid admissions. The public certainly enjoyed the first all school grand final, with CBC gaining a nine-point victory over High School. In 1964, to cater for boys up to 15 years of age, a Saturday morning sub-junior competition was inaugurated by a number of enthusiasts from the various league clubs headed by president A.Clarke and secretary R.Florance. CBC won the grand final. (The “sub-junior” competitions are now junior competitions administered by the GFL Junior Council). In 1965 a regrettable decision by the high school principal not to allow his team to participate in the junior competition was not well received by the football executive and followers generally. The high school team rejoined the competition in 1966, but unfortunately a number of its better players had joined other local clubs with the result the side was only able to score two goals and four behinds in 13 matches it played as against 1925 points scored against them. Kambalda juniors recorded the nickel town’s first every premiership by defeating Kalgoorlie City by nine points in the 1974 grand final. The Tigers prevailed against John Paul College (Saints) in the 13 and under and 15 and under games - winning by fairly comfortable margins in both. The first leg of the double saw them kick an inaccurate 4.13 (37 points) to the Saints’ 3.5 (23). JUNIOR FOOTBALL NEWS One group of volunteers which fulfills an invaluable role in Goldfields football, with little or no fanfare, is the Goldfields Football League Junior Council. The council is responsible for running junior football, which involves teams from the five senior clubs and John Paul College (Saints). This level of football was originally administered by the Goldfields Sub-Junior Football Association for many years, but now comes under the auspices of the GFL Board of Commission. Junior football, which has a great sponsor in the regional branch of the RAC, caters for three grades - 15/under, 13/under and 11/under - and a host of volunteers devote hundreds of hours each season to ensure this vital level of Aussie Rules development is properly maintained. The GFL is fortunate in having a dedicated band of officials serving on the council, which is chaired by league commissioner Ken Peterson. Long-serving registrar is Faye Moodie, while the club co-ordinators are Stephen Booy (Railways - 90 913691), Pam Woodcock (Mines - 90 218050h; 90 910200w), Debbie Withell (Kambalda - 90 271709h; 90 271357w), Rick Dingle (Boulder - 90 932215w; 90 931200w), Allison Hunter (Kalgoorlie - 90 911608h; 90 919097w) and Paul Edwards (Saints - 90 213346h; 90 809152w).",5);arrFiles[21]=new Array(22,"junior_stats05.html","2006-04-09","junior stats03","","","2006 PREMIERSHIP POINTS 10 \'S AND UNDER P W D L For Agst PTS % RAILWAYS 2 2 0 0 85 55 8 154.55 MINES 2 2 0 0 41 28 8 146.43 SAINTS 2 1 0 1 61 57 4 107.02 KAMBALDA 2 1 0 1 61 60 4 101.67 BOULDER 2 0 0 2 56 69 0 81.16 KALGOORLIE 2 0 0 2 30 65 0 46.15 12 \'S AND UNDER MINES 2 2 0 0 91 33 8 275.76 SAINTS 2 2 0 0 95 41 8 231.71 KALGOORLIE 2 1 0 1 96 51 4 188.24 BOULDER 2 1 0 1 50 59 4 84.75 RAILWAYS 2 0 0 2 35 119 0 29.41 KAMBALDA 2 0 0 2 20 84 0 23.81 14 \'S AND UNDER KALGOORLIE 2 2 0 0 217 16 8 1356.25 BOULDER 2 2 0 0 117 43 8 272.09 SAINTS 2 1 0 1 161 55 4 292.73 KAMBALDA 2 1 0 1 49 88 4 55.68 RAILWAYS 2 0 0 2 27 230 0 11.74 MINES 2 0 0 2 15 154 0 9.74 16 \'S AND UNDER SAINTS 2 2 0 0 211 51 8 413.73 MINES 2 2 0 0 223 107 8 208.41 BOULDER 2 1 0 1 145 164 4 88.41 RAILWAYS 2 1 0 1 113 152 4 74.34 KALGOORLIE 2 0 0 2 92 161 0 57.14 KAMBALDA 2 0 0 2 120 269 0 44.61 2006 MATCH RESULTS ROUND 1 10 \'s / U Mines, 3.4 (22) d Kambalda, 3.1 (19) - Saints, 4.3 (27) d Boulder, 2.6 (18) Railways, 7.4 (46) d Kalgoorlie, 3.3 (21) 12 \'s / U Mines, 8.7 (55) d Kambalda, 1.1 (7) - Saints, 7.4 (46) d Boulder, 3.3 (21) Kalgoorlie, 11.4 (70) d Railways, 2.3 (15) 14 \'s / U Kambalda, 4.5 (29) d Mines, 1.8 (14) – Boulder, 6.7 (43) d Saints, 3.5 (23) Kalgoorlie, 14.8 (92) d Railways, 2.3 (15) 16 \'s / U Mines, 22.11 (143) d Kambalda, 9.12 (66) – Saints, 15.20 (110) d Boulder, 3.1 (19) Railways, 12.9 (81) d Kalgoorlie, 7.9 (51) ROUND 2 10 \'s / U Mines, 3.1(19) d Kalgoorlie , 1.3 (9) – Railways, 5.9 (39) d Saints, 5.4 (34) Kambalda, 6.6 (42) d Boulder , 6.3 (39) 12 \'s / U Mines, 5.6 (36) d Kalgoorlie, 4.2 (26) – Saints, 7.7 (49) d Railways, 3.2 (20) Boulder, 3.11 (29) d Kambalda, 1.7 (13) 14 \'s / U Kalgoorlie, 19.11 (125) d Mines, 0.1 (1) – Saints, 21.12 (138) d Railways, 2.0 (12) Boulder, 11.8 (74) d Kambalda, 3.2 (20) 16 \'s / U Mines, 11.14 (80) d Kalgoorlie , 6.5 (41) – Saints, 15.11 (101) d Railways, 4.8 (32) Boulder , 19.12 (126) d Kambalda, 8.6 (54)",33);arrFiles[22]=new Array(23,"leftframe.html","2006-03-26","index_leftframe","","","",2);arrFiles[23]=new Array(24,"links.html","2005-08-07","links","","","EXTERNAL LINKS WESTERN AUSTRALIAN COUNTRY FOOTBALL LEAGUE www.wacfl.com.au AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE www.afl.com.au WESTERN AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE www.wafl.com.au WA FOOTY FORUM pub94.ezboard.com/fwafootyforumfrm67 WESTERN AUSTRALIAN AMATEUR FOOTBALL LEAGUE www.waafl.com.au WA WOMEN’S FOOTBALL LEAGUE www.wawfl.org.au DEPARTMENT OF SPORT AND RECREATION www.dsr.wa.gov.au",2);arrFiles[24]=new Array(25,"medals_rec.html","2005-10-09","medals","","","MITCHELL MEDALLISTS | BACK | 1896 Watson (Victorians) 1948 R.B.Ferguson (Rail) 1980 P.Higgins (Mines) 1897 E. DON JONES RETRAVISION RESERVES F&B AWARD The Reserves Fairest and Best Award now enjoys a much higher profile with the generous support of Don Jones, of Don Jones Retravision, who donates a medal and package of electrical goods worth 500. The award has been extremely close in more recent years, but in the 2002 season it was completely dominated by one player – Boulder’s Shannon Parfitt - who polled a record number of votes for a three-series qualifying season. Shannon attracted votes in nine games. In six of those was judged best afield and finished with a total of 41 votes - 15 more than his nearest rival. The 2003 count was the complete opposite, with two young veterans sharing the honours with 34 points each - Boulder \'s Mark Schutze and Mines \' Brett Turner. LEN STOKES COLTS FAIREST AND BEST AWARD T he 2003 season is the 30th that the colts fairest and best award has been donated by a great supporter of Goldfields football in Len Stokes. The award is one of the most important in the league as it formally recognises the excellent young talent we have in this region. In 2001 the Fairest and Best count was extremely close, with only three votes separating the top four players. Last season’s count was dominated by two players, who were separated by a single vote. Mines’ Andre Sullivan had an excellent season to compile 34 votes, but the Len Stokes Award for 2002 went to Railways’ Rob Forrest who finished with 35 votes. Sullivan again figured in this year \'s count, but after a keen battle finished second with 40 votes. The top award went to Kambalda vice-captain Clint Jasper, with a total of 42 votes. FYSON MEDAL One of the most sought after individual honours in Goldfields football is the Fyson Medal, awarded for the best afield in inter-league fixtures and league grand finals. The medal was introduced in 1981 by Goldfields businessman Chris Fyson as an incentive for local players to represent the Goldfields and to recognise outstanding performances. The inaugural winner was former Kambalda champion ruck-rover Kim Anderson for a superlative display in the Eagles \' grand final victory over Kalgoorlie in 1981. MACGREGOR MEDAL Great Southern Carnival:- Goldfields first competed in the historic series in 1995 and hosted the carnival in its centenary year (1996), when both the league and colts representative teams were runners- up. In 1997 the GFL colts team coached by Conan Wheatcroft won the championship and repeated the success the very next year. Conan has been a great servant of Goldfields football in his capacity of coach of the representative colts teams. For the 2003 campaign he was succeeded as coach by Ian Dunstan, whose team did extremely well despite not qualifying for the grand final. The Brian Macgregor Award for the colts fairest and best player in inter-league fixtures was introduced to coincide with the 1996 Great Southern Carnival held in Kalgoorlie- Boulder. It was later expanded to include the Wesfarmers Country championships, in which Goldfields participated up until last year. Wesfarmers has since been dropped from the GFL’s inter-league colts program. Premiership points earned in the top two divisions of the junior competition and those in the three divisions of senior football are calculated on a weighted points system to determine the champion club. In 2002 Railways won the senior award for the sixth time with 282 points from Mines (276), Boulder (188), Kalgoorlie (184) and Kambalda (76). The 2003 champion club is Mines. The award was introduced in 1976 and has been won on 10 occasions by Kambalda, nine by Mines, twice by Kalgoorlie and once by Boulder. This handsome trophy is carved from original timber used in the famous Bayley \'s Reward Gold Mine in Coolgardie. Last year a special judging panel was handed the daunting task of selecting a winner from record field of 13 nominees, which is indicative of the host of talented youngster competing with distinction at league level. Since its inception, the award has been dominated by Mines and Railways, who have respectively provided the winner on eight and seven occasions.. The other three are shared by Boulder and Kambalda and before last year Kalgoorlie had yet to provide the top rookie. This was rectified by the selection of Ryan Silvester as the 2002 League Rookie of the Year. This year Mines \' Cameron Allen was the unanimous choice of a special selection panel. GILL SMASH REPAIRS MINOR LEAGUE PREMIERS AWARD Neil Gill introduced a 1000 cash incentive for the club taking out the league minor premiership in 1998 and it has been shared between four clubs since. The initital award went to Boulder, while the 1999 winner was Kalgoorlie before Railways took it out in 2000 and again in 2001 from Mines because of a superior for and against percentage. However, the Diorites were unchallenged in the 2002 season and completed the qualifying series undefeated to win the award for the first time. DICK ROBINSON LEAGUE GOAL-KICKING AWARD In 2000 the GFL Commission introduced a special award to recognise the leading goal-kicker in the league competition and thought it fitting it should reflect the outstanding record of former Railways champion goalsneak Dick Robinson. Dick still holds the league record for most goals kicked in a season - 139 in Railways \' undefeated season in 1974 - and holds a special place in the proud history of Goldfields football. A special medal is now awarded annually, along with a 300 cash component generously donated by local real estate firm John Matthew and Sons. In 2002 the award went to Mines’ Rob Hansen, who headed the goal-kicking with 58 - one more than Railways’ Kody Kelman, who topped the list in the previous two seasons. This season Mines \' Ritchie Bourne figured in a keen tussle with Kelman before runnning away with the award with 72 goals. The leading Reserves goal-kicker was Mines \' Darrah Doutch with 41 and the Diorites completed a treble when Jed Grantham kicked the most majors in the colts competition (35).",52);arrFiles[25]=new Array(26,"mitchell.html","2005-08-07","mitchell","","","2003 MITCHELL MEDAL TALLY Name Round 1 Total Round 2 Total Round 3 Total Round 4 Total Round 5 Total Round 6 Total Round 7 Total Round 8 Total Round 9 Total Round 10 Total Round 11 Total Round 12 Total Round 13 Total Round 14 Total Round 15 Total Round 16 Total Round 17 Total Round 18 Total Round 19 Total Round 20 Total A. Chairman of the ADA Oral HealthCommittee, Dr. Derek Lewis says the Association believes mouthguards should becompulsory for all children participating in contact sports. “Defend your smile is the catch cryof dentists,” Dr. Lewis said. “There are far too many unnecessary, serious and even permanent injuries to teeth because a mouthguard was not wornor fitted correctly. The absence of a mouthguard can result in long andpotentially expensive treatment to restore knocked out teeth”, he added. “Mouthguards also help reduce therisk of jaw fractures and concussion caused by a collision. They should be wornduring any sport where there is the chance of a knock or contact to the face”,Lewis said. The SportsMedicine Association reports that 50% of children experience some form ofdental injury, with 25% of them sustaining an injury to a permanent tooth bythe time they reached 14 years of age. Mouthguardsare a removable soft plastic shield worn over teeth. They are worn mostcommonly over the upper teeth to protect them and jaws from traumatic injury. Types ofMouthguards: ‘Over-the-counter’ or‘boil-and-bite’ mouthguards are available through pharmacies. However, theycannot take individual mouth size and teeth into account. They can beuncomfortable and offer limited protection, because they often have poorsuction and can fall out. The ADA Increcommends investing in a custom-fitted mouthguard because it is moulded to theshape of your teeth, making it more comfortable and protective. A correctlyfitted mouthguard will protect teeth, stop biting onto the lips and cushionteeth to reduce the risk of concussion and jaw fracture and not impede breathing. The ADA says that although the Associationrecommends the use of the custom made mouthguards wherever possible, anover-the-counter mouthguard is better than no protection at all. Standards Australia similarly supports custom fittedmouthguards. Its guidelines for mouthguards state: “Custom-fitted mouthguards(formed on a cast of the wearer’s jaw) are the most acceptable. Mouth-formedand stock mouthguards have disadvantages with respect to lack of retention,single-tooth contact, inadequate thickness, incorrect fitting and often rapiddeterioration with consequent risk of injury.” Mouthguard Tips: Wear your mouthguard at training and during the game Rinse your mouthguard before and after use Update your mouthguard every 12 months, to ensure it is fully effective Wash your mouthguard only with soap and in cold or lukewarm water Keep your mouthguard clean, stored in a rigid container and away from heat to ensure it maintains its shape For children, mouthguards may need to be replaced more regularly than 12 months as children’s mouths are growing and deciduous (first) teeth are being lost and replaced with permanent teeth. ADA Inc is urging parents, schoolsand coaches to make wearing a mouthguard mandatory for children andsportspeople playing contact sports, which put teeth at risk. “A mouthguard is an investment in avoidingpotentially painful and costly dental injuries,” Dr Lewis says. Every year, dentists arefrustrated by treating dental injuries caused by sporting accidents, due topeople not wearing a mouthguard whilst playing contact sport. Anyone whoparticipates in a sport that carries a risk of a knockto the face shouldwear a mouthguard. This includessports where contact is part of the game like football, boxing and rugby, but also collisionsports where contact often happens but is not expected or allowed. Theseinclude basketball, hockey, water polo, lacrosse, netball, baseball, softball, squash, soccer, BMX bike riding, horse riding, skateboarding, in-line skating, trampolining, cricket (wicket keeping or batting without a helmet), waterskiing and snow ski racing. Why you need amouthguard A mouthguard helpscushion a blow to the face that otherwise might result in an injury to themouth or jaw. A stray elbow, a fall or heavy collision can leave you withchipped or broken teeth, internal damage to a tooth, tooth loss and in severecases, concussion or a broken jaw. Injuries like this can lead to longand potentially expensive treatment to restore the teeth and mouth back tonormal function and appearance. According toAustralian research, sports injuries account for about one-third of traumaticinjuries to teeth. The Sports Medicine Association reports that 50% ofchildren experience some form of dental injury. Statistics like these reinforce theimportance of mouthguards. Mouthguards , which typically coverthe upper teeth, cushion a blow to the face, minimizing the risk of brokenteeth and injuries to the soft tissues of the mouth. They also help reduce therisk of jaw fractures and concussion. When do I wear a mouthguard? Mouthguards should be worn whilst playing and training for any sport that could involve contact to the face. Other Mouthguard Tips: Update your mouthguard every 12 months, to ensure it is fully effective Keep your mouthguard clean, stored in a rigid container and away from heat to ensure it maintains its shape Formore information on mouthguards and protecting teeth, people can visit www.ada.org.au or call the ADA Inc on (02)9906 4412. __________________________________________________________________________ For more information about Mouthguard Awareness or to speak with an ADA Incspokesperson, please contact the Porter Novelli Melbourne: PatrickMcClelland Sarah Harvie Phone:03 9289 9555 /0409 499 419 Phone:03 9289 9555 / 0402217 956 Email: pmcclelland@porternovelli.com.au Email: sharvie@porternovelli.com.au Types of mouthguards - what type should I use? Teeth are at risk of serious damage whenplaying sport, and a knock to the mouth without a mouthguard can result inbroken teeth and injuries to the lips, tongue, face or jaw. Mouthguards helpcushion blows that cause these injuries and can reduce the incidence andseverity of concussion. Thisfact sheet outlines the types of mouthguards available, how best to clean andstore them and when you should replace your mouthguard. Thereare two specific types of mouthguards, the custom fitted mouthguard and the‘boil-and-bite’ or ‘over the counter’ mouthguard. 1. The custom fitted mouthguard Custom fitted mouthguards are made byyour dentist and constructed directly from a mould taken of your teeth. Themain advantage of custom fitting is that it allows the dentist to accuratelyassess your mouth and provide the optimum dimensions, coverage and thickness ofthe mouthguard for you. The dentist can also take a history of previousinjuries and assess the type of mouthguard appropriate for your sport. These mouthguards are comfortable, allowyou to talk easily and do not restrict breathing. Dentists recommend custom fittedmouthguards as they offer the best protection and fit compared to a mouthguardyou buy over the counter. 2. The “over-the-counter” or“boil and bite” mouthguard These mouthguards are available atpharmacies, supermarkets and sports stores and are cheaper than custom fittedmouthguards. The mouthguards are softened in hot water, inserted and allowed toadapt to the shape of your mouth as they cool and set. The Australian Dental Association andStandards Australia do not recommend the over the counter or boil and bitemouthguards. They are usually poorly fitting and often uncomfortable to wearbecause they haven’t been specifically fitted to the shape of your mouth andteeth. This lessens their effectiveness and risks greater damage to teeth. However, an over the counter mouthguardis far better than not wearing a mouthguard at all. If you do need to use anover-the-counter mouthguard, be sure to carefully follow the directions, otherwise you can end up with a poor-fitting mouth protector that offersinadequate protection. How long will my mouthguard last? Toensure a mouthguard is fully effective, they should be replaced every 12months. A mouthguard may also need to be replaced i f major changes occur to the teeth like restorations or loss of teeth. Children’smouthguards need to be changed more frequently as their mouth can change whenthey grow or when adult teeth push through. How do I clean my mouthguard? Aclean mouthguard will last longer than a dirty one. Mouthguards need to berinsed in cold, soapy water after use, dried and stored in a plastic container. As mouthguards can distort under higher temperatures, they should be kept in acool place. What to do if a tooth is knockedout: Wearing a properly fitted mouthguard while participating in sports willprotect against dental injuries. Despite this, accidents can happen and teethcan sometimes be knocked out. This fact sheet outlines what to do if a toothis knocked out, how to best prepare the injury for treatment and reduce thelikelihood of any long-term damage. · Ifa tooth is knocked out, the following steps should be taken: Þ Remaincalm, find the tooth, handle it by the crown only and ensure it’s clean. Thecrown is the smooth white part of the tooth that is normally visible in themouth. Þ Ifthe root is dirty, gently suck the tooth or rinse it in milk or very briefly in water. Note, gently sucking the tooth is not a suitable technique forchildren, adults who are unconscious, in shock, not fully calm or co-operativeor lack understanding of what is happening. Þ Immediatelyreplant tooth in the socket (to maximise the chance of effective reimplantationthis should ideally not be delayed beyond 30 minutes) Þ Holdtooth in place Þ Ifyou are unable to replant the tooth, keep it moist by putting the tooth in acup of milk ,by sealing it in plastic wrap or placing it in the patient \'s mouth next to thecheek, if the patient is able to do so, and: Þ SeekImmediate Dental Treatment - Time is Critical DO NOT § Hold the tooth by the root surface § Scrape or rub the root surface § Let the tooth dry out § Rinseor store the tooth in water for
