The
reigning premiers Railways commenced their title defence in emphatic
fashion disposing of derby rivals the Roos by 67 points. The
Panthers missing key premiership personnel in Kody Kelman, Rhett Hassell,
Paul Funazzi, Michael Outhwaite, Kris Lemm , Ryan Grljusich, Ben Grace and
Ryan Stubbs just to name a few with most of that list no longer in town,
coach Conan Wheatcroft would have been mighty pleased the the Panthers
performance. A statement was made in the first half where a
rich level of skill was shown by the Panthers that would normally be rare
for a round one performance. The Panthers looked fit, quick and pressure
displayed to their opponents didn't see the Roos get two flags until mid
way through the second quarter. Defence led by Brendan Sacilotto,
Brodie Peterson and Christian Robinson nullified the very few Roo forward
thrusts, while Michael Blacker back with Railways after a number of years
with Subiaco, Aaron Rymer and skipper David Stubbs were damaging mid
field while up forward options a plenty were abound with key forward
Michael Towns and support cast Tristan Nelson, Meshek White and Scott
Tie amongst the majors with two of Tie's goals being genuine class
with a hint of flair. The Roos were effectively out of the contest
going goalless in the first and failed to win a quarter but positives
taken from this game was the continued solid form by skipper David
Clark, while Justin Langridge recruited from South Australia looks a good
player. Beau Hay is a youngster with plenty of promise while vice
captain Dale Beeson has the biggest beating heart in black and white
was forced to abandon his usual forward line play to go down back to
try and halt the Panthers onslaught.
Railways
will eagerly await their next contest against the seasons big improvers
Mines Rovers with concerns for Russell Davies with a leg injury while
Simon Kemp accepted a one match suspension for charging. The Roos
don't play again until April 22 which will give coach Peter Reed the
opportunity to basically re-start Kanga's season after starting in
disappointing fashion in their first two games.
Played Under Lights Digger Daws Oval Thursday
April 5th.

Roos
In 2006
Mines had four wins all against Kambalda, to open season 2007 Mines
defeated Kambalda again and entered this derby clash very optimistic of
beating their bitter rival and someone different to the Eagles, and beat
them they did winning all quarters but the third en route to a pleasing
and satisfying 54 point margin.
The
Diorites once again got good goal kicking value from key recruit Matt
James who with four in this game now has 10 for the season and Darrah
Doutch who has kicked four goals in each opening game. The Diorites
received wonderful service by big men Leigh Mourish, Mark McQueen and
Brett Pattison while skipper Rob Hansen again played his usual quality
game while Trent Moon enjoys great form in his comeback
season.
The
Tigers would dearly have loved to give popular club man Daniel Coughlan
reasons to re-joice his 100th game and it wouldn't have been
any surprise to the Tigers faithful that Coughlan found himself on
the scoresheet and also in the better players. The Tigers did rally
in the third quarter to shave 2 goals off the half time margin but Mines
ended the contest with a 6 goal to one final term. Damien Dunlea
looks a dangerous prospect around goals now booting five for the season
and youngster Levi Roos with less than a dozen league games is growing in
promise and stature with each league appearance, while coach Shane Cable
would have been pleased with the performance of Colin
Harvey.
