Mines Rovers scored the boil over of the season in defeating the raging favourites Railways by 29 points to claim their 3rd Premiership in a row and the 40th from this very proud and successful club. Despite losing to Railways 4 times from 5 starts including by co-incidence by 29 points in the Second Semi Final the Diorites attacked this game with sound preparation and execution to leave Railways lamenting a 2 goal second half and a loss that wasn’t expected. The Diorites made one change from the Preliminary Final including Brett Pattison and omitting the unlucky Ben Basley who played every league game for the year, while Railways considered champion Full Forward Kody Kelman but in the end did not select, included Meshek White, Carl Armstrong & Christian Robinson while leaving out Roland Morrison, Travis Eyers and Michael Tenardi. Despite fine conditions a strong breeze favored the Hospital end and Railways were keen to get away to a solid start after winning the toss and choosing that direction, but at quarter time Mines would have been well pleased to only be 14 points behind, and despite Mines not also taking full advantage in the second the game was neutral at the half with Railways hold a one point lead. The game turned on its head in the third quarter with both teams only adding one goal, but Mines were starting to dominate in most positions and holding the minor premier to one goal with the breeze would have led them into the last with much confidence, which did transpire into two goals inside the opening four minutes including a running special by Diorites finals jet in Cameron Allen, that was the closing signs on any Railways comeback despite some opportunities Mines kicked a further four for the quarter before Ryan Stubbs kicked the last goal of the game which was way too late for the disappointing Panthers. Luke Nugent controlled the big man contests, while Cameron Allen collected possession at will, while Jason Boyd in his 80th league game for Mines played his best ever match, while retiring Champs Brett Turner 312 GFL Games/267 for Mines and Mark McQueen 59 for Mines all produced stellar performances to finish in a fairytale way, with Turner saluting the GFL with his 11th League Premiership ! Wow! As if the league game was bad enough for Railways, their previously undefeated colts lost the Grand Final to Kalgoorlie, while Mines reserves also made it three in a row in belting Kalgoorlie, who’s first goal came during the second quarter when Mines had added the first 12.
