A powerful second half saw railways surge to a 7 goal victory but not before Boulder showed great heart and commitment in being more than competitive after the early stages of the game, Railways blasted 3 goals to nothing in the early stages of the game but then Boulder fought back to take the lead in the second quarter, leaving Railways supporters a touch nervous who thought the night’s contest was a formality.  Tom Briggs took on the railways senior coaching role in the absence of Conan Wheatcroft and whatever message he gave the Panthers at half time had the desired effect with the red and blacks controlling the second half and willed themselves to top spot on the ladder. Ruckman Dave Serich was superb and continued the Railways tradition of having great big men wearing the 25 Guernsey after class acts in the past including 3 time Best and Fairest and Mitchell Medalist James Langley and dual Fairest and Best winner Todd Colqhoun of the Mid 90’s.  Last Seasons Fairest and Best Winner Brodie Peterson was rock solid all night while Liam Coyle returning to the club after some years in Perth, was more than effective with run, dash and toughness from half back.  For the Tigers Scott Worthington was brilliant and could in fact poll top votes when the Mitchell Medal votes are counted for this game later in the year, his reading of the play, strong and sure overhead marking had him locked into an engrossing wing battle with Railways young gun Dave Harring while Brent Marra showed flashes of his brilliance and reliableness.

Played Sunday at Digger Daws Oval May 3rd.

Mines Dominated the start and finish, while Kambalda the middle, but it was Mines in the end recording an important and season defining 32 point victory.

This was the first time the two sides have met since the 2008 Grand Final, and personnel and prospects for both clubs have changed plenty.

Mines lost Key Forward Daniel Casset during the week, with the player returning to Victoria, leaving a gaping hole up forward for the Diorites, but coach Sean Millane would have been over the moon with how his club played and found goalscoring via 10 different sources including and early purple patch by small forward Jason Boyd who has had a great start to the 2009 season and in the end that early thrust went a long way to the Diorites securing their 2nd victory of the year.

Kambalda entered the contest without Troy Wilson and Paul Ridley and struggled to cover these losses though the second quarter display still confirms the Eagles will continue to have their moments in 2009 and should press for more victories as the season progress’s than their current one.

The Ladder. We have quite an even and exciting competition in 2009 and the forthcoming Second Series should start to sort the completion one would expect.
