In unseasonable balmy conditions a clash that promised a lot, delivered everything and some more. Entering the game Railways were winless and a loss here could effectively have spelt the end to finals aspirations, whilst for Kalgoorlie a win would have provided a 3 game buffer over their arch rivals. Railways entered the game with out Champion Ruckman James Langley, Skipper David Stubbs, Suspended Roland Morrison Forwards Michael Towns & Meshek White while the Roos were without Bryan Tepper, the Talented Lee Boath, Ex Panther Stewart Gould and shut down expert Steve Wilson, well all those would have been entertained spectators as the derby rivals went at in a Round 7 clash that meant so much to both clubs. The game sprung to life with Railways kicking 6 goals in the 2nd Quarter with new club cult figure David Marinovich amongst the goals and marking with surety, Aaron Rymer was dynamic in his best game for 2008 and Carl Armstrong was the most effective midfielder in the game, when it looked as though the Panthers were to head to half with a 5-6 goal buffer late goals to Roos Coach Shane Properjohn & Wes Miller which in part was spurred by injury to youngster Matt Cullen saw the Black and Whites still firmly in the contest to trail by 19 points. After half time both sides attacked every contest with sustained vigour which saw Railways vice captain Rhett Foster suffer concussion in a heavy tackle and Daniel Colling suffer a groin strain had Railways fighting a Roos comeback led by Wes Miller, Rhys O’Loughlin and the obviously injured Shane Properjohn who was making limited possessions count, mostly with goals! Turning for home Railways kicking to their clubrooms end had their buffer reduced to 10 points. Youngster Josh Brown showed calm nerves to kick 2 or Railways 3 last quarter goals from set shots but again the Roos came again to narrow the margin to less than a goal, then deep in the game Railways Half Back David Manhood who turns 33 in October mustered his experience after an indifferent night to convert a set shot from long range to give Railways an 11 point margin, only to see the Roos courtesy of Nick Hay win the next centre bounce which ended up with Luke Taylor who converted a running shot on goal which was timed with the siren and the jubilant Panthers were home by 5 points. It was no surprise the game was close, with Kalgoorlie enjoying the benefit of a 7point victory in Round one, but this win after 3 closes losses of their 4 losing games now has Railways the chance to make some good of season 2008, while Kalgoorlie are still inside the Top 4 will wish to press any advantages they gain as positions 2-5 will be all up for grabs including Boulder and Kambalda. Railways were brilliantly served by Carl Armstrong, reliable and tough Defender Brodie Peterson, youngsters Dave Harring and Justin Giles who had played state country colts the previous evening and the Rymer brothers the cleverness of Aaron and Dependability from defence of Chris. The Roos Wes Miller who also had played State Country League the previous night was very good, while Matt Wellstead, Rhys O’Loughlin had effective evenings, while Lindsay Pankhurst who is soon to leave the region with his employment was a great contributitor while the injured Shane Properjohn with 5 goals and Kim Moyle tried hard.

Played in warm conditions this match was the game to follow the previous Boulder Derby 19 goal each shoot out which saw the Diorites emerge victors by 4 points. Well these two clashes were chalk and cheese in a low scoring dour affair which defied the actual conditions. The Diorites had the game in hand after being the only side to convert in the first quarter, and had leads at each break of 15 points, 20 points, 21 points to the eventual final margin of 26 points. The Diorites were successful in keeping the dangerous Boulder forwards to limited scoreboard activity with Mines defender Mitch Graham in red hot form. Former Roo Ben Stein made good his league opportunity by kicking 3 goals while usual defender Brent Marra who has impressed plenty in his time at the Tigers was his sides only multiple goal scorer. Chayne George playing his 51st league game was amongst the Tigers best and has had a most impressive start to the 2008 season while for the victors Chris Brabazon continues his fine form after returning recently to league footy while Mines would have been pleased junior members of the side in Ben Basley and Kerion Giblett figured in the best players.
This Weekend is BELT UP Road Safety Weekend.
Kambalda host Boulder at Kambalda West under light Saturday Night which like many forthcoming fixtures is a crunch affair between 2nd and 3rd on the ladder separated only by a small percentage, though the Eagles have a game in hand. After declining to play last start at Sir Richard Moore Sports Centre Mines Rovers will visit the venue Sunday to play a rejuvenated Railways, last time Railways surprised all to lead all night, except when it mattered and Mines won by 2 points.
