The clash between the competitions bottom and top team did not go to script with an undermanned Railways bucking all the odds to inflict Mines Rovers first defeat (forfeit aside) of 2008.  Railways did all the attacking deep into the last quarter with forward Mick McLean converting an uncontested mark with only moments left on the clock, which prompted joyful celebrations by all those connected to the red and blacks.  Mines were gunning for 9 straight victories over the Panthers and looked set to do this before the game turned mid way through the last quarter when Skipper Rob Hansen was firstly yellow carded and then red carded, Hansen who is due to play his 150th game for the Diorites this weekend will face the tribunal, but worse than that left his side a man down for the balance of the contest and gave Railways an opportunity to pull off a remarkable come from behind victory to shoot from last to third on the GFL Ladder.  The Panthers had the better of the early going to lead at quarter time, but in the second quarter the accurate Diorites skipped away to handy lead before a late goal to Railways skipper David Stubbs reduced Mines advantage to 3 points at the half.  Early in the third quarter David Stubbs left the ground with what appeared a serious shoulder injury, Stubbs had only recently returned of missing many weeks with a wrist injury and too this point was a very influential Panther.  Mines had gained some ascendancy with Mitch Graham repelling many Panther attacks, as did Nathan Mourish while Cameron Allen was every where the ball was and had looked to break the Panthers with a 14 point lead at three quarter time.  A further party trick goal to on baller Diorite Justin Langridge looked to have done enough for Mines before Railways rose after the ejection of Rob Hansen with Aaron Rymer becoming prolific, the smoothness of Sean O’Keeffe while best afield Roland Morrison gave his on ballers true value from his ruck work and and became a dominant force around the ground.  Returning from Great Southern Carnival Duties Railways pair Justin Giles and Dave Harring were invaluable inclusions for Railways while MacGregor Medallist Josh Hunt had a tough day down back while Luke Gust played mostly only during the second half.

Railways buoyed by this performance without walk up starts in 07 Mitchell Medallist James Langley, Carl Armstrong , seasons Leading goalscorer in David Marinovich and the recently returned premiership player Graham Wright should use this game as the foundation stone for the balance of the season, while for Mines Rovers they will have the likes of Leigh Mourish, Brett Pattison, Travis Hart, Luke Pritchard and Keiron Giblett available for senior returns in the near future.

Played at Digger Daws Oval Sunday June 22nd.

In a vital clash for both, second spot was the prize on offer for the victor, and this would turn out to be Boulder by 28 points, who claimed themselves outright second spot and celebrated Co-Captain Adrian Hooks 150th appearance in the black and gold in style.  In game that never reached great heights in the first half, did see the lead change during the third quarter before the Tigers turned on the power with a five goal to two final quarter.  Chris Maguire was again amongst the goals and has now kicked 40 goals for the season and Damian Dunlea with his four has moved to 25 and third on the goal kicking ladder.  Mid Fielder Chayne George continued his outstanding form to earn best players honours while recent Great Southern All Star Scott Worthington gave a young touch to the best Tigers.

Tim Fitzgerald was the chief for the Eagles in front of goals with 4 and the Kambalda side would have been disappointed for a 10 point three quarter deficit turn into a 28 point loss and has seen them slip to 4th on the ladder.

This Week.

A Mines side on the rebound is the daunting task that face’s Kalgoorlie at Sir Richard Moore Sports Centre this Sunday, the Roos who last start defeated Railways were the only side in 2007 to defeat Mines Rovers (twice), should the Roos be able to muster the same sort of upset as Railways of this week against Mines then they could find themselves back in the four.

At Kambalda the Eagles will wish to reverse a worrying form slump since starting the season so positively and would enjoy the challenge of hosting Railways whom defeated them by over 10 goals last start.  The Eagles are a different proposition at Kambalda and despite Railways performance against Mines Rovers will need to be at full attention to give that victory some real value and give themselves a game break inside the four should they be successful over Kambalda.
