Powerful 1st and 3rd quarters saw Mines Rovers travel away from Kambalda West Oval with another 4 points and some what of a mortgage on top spot of the GFL Ladder in 08. Led by evergreen veteran Brett Turner who kicked 6 goals in his 289th Senior game and 244th for Mines showed his youthful effectiveness at 37 years of age is still very prevalent as the Diorites mount up for back to back Flags. The Diorites also gained terrific value from mid field guns in Trent Moon, Chris Brabazon and Nick Willis. Kambalda missing key players including Captain George Lloyd, Ruckman Chris Skidmore, Jason Dowling, Lorrence Farmer and Daniel Milton have a bye this week coming and face crucial games thereafter with second spot still up for grabs. The very useful Sean Matheson was the Eagles leading goalkicker while the Freemantle Boys Matt and Stephen continue to give their club excellent service while Tyrone Ward is running into some form. The Diorites have some milestone matches looming with Russell Walton on 99 games, Rob Hansen 148 and Brett Turner 244 the latter two are games solely with the blue and whites. Ironically the same weekend that Sydney and West Coast resumed their tight contests, the same applied to the Tigers and Roos who have had more than their share of close margins in recent years, though this one finished with both teams locked together on 85 points, the result gave the Roos some hope of lifting from the bottom while for the Tigers they didn’t realize an opportunity to provide a little space between their current 2nd spot and pack converging below. The Tigers commenced the final quarter 18 points behind and kicking 4.7 in the last may have indicated they did make the most of opportunities. Former Tiger and current Club games record holder turned the tables on his old side with a stirring 7 goal performance while the Roos on field leaders Dale Beeson, Shane Properjohn and Wes Miller all did their very best to inspire their troops while the Tigers had young guns to thank in Chayne George, Scott Worthington and John Grandile for provided the Tigers at least with the drive to take some points away from the contest.
Great Southern Carnival. The Goldfields side coached by Barry Gresham, and with on field leaders Panther Chris Rymer Captain and Tiger Scott Worthington Vice Captain will take on last seasons Carnival winners Clontarf to open their campaign this weekend at Lake Grace. The Goldfields Finest youth will be on display in a carnival the region has been very successful with after securing championships in 2004, 2005 and 2006, before a one point loss in the preliminary rounds saw them finish 2007 in 3rd.
Round 12 in the GFL. As above derby weekend will be missing some of the regions best players competing in the Great Southern Carnival but important contests exist particularly at Sir Richard Moore Sunday where Railways and Kalgoorlie will do battle with the winner keeping finals honors alive and well, while at Digger Daws Boulder and Mines compete in a top of the table clash.
